Another band looking to follow the de rigeur Ben Folds template for quirky indie-piano pop this summer, Scouting For Girls understandably fall short of our beloved Ben’s standards.
Unfortunately, She’s So Lovely also fails to match up to contemporaries like The Rumble Strips who, so far at least, seem to do much the same thing only better.
Chipper
The tune, all handclaps, building piano chords and chipper drumbeats, is jaunty enough - but the problem lies in the self-consciously twee, faux-naive “She’s pretty, she’s a fittie” lyrics which Stride’s chirpy delivery soon renders irritating.
With so many others jockeying for position with this kind of throwaway whimsy, there needs to be more inventiveness for these Scouts to earn their badges.
