Kate Nash is, on the face of things, very similar sounding to her comparative - but there's something fundamentally different between Nash and Allen. In 'Foundations', we have a barebones vocal-led song with piano backing, lacking the faux-reggae beats and watery vocals of Allen. Nash is more grown-up, more indie, more edgy - and more credible as a result.
Of course, there's still a unpleasant dose of the cockney accent - it seems it's the fashion, which isn't particularly endearing, but it's a hell of a lot more melodic than the raw-but-crude-by-comparison 'Caroline's a Victim'.
For all the flaws, imperfections and rough edges in this record it's hard to deny that it's a well written song, more open and honest than a lot of other stuff in the charts. The production is minimal but effective, and this track certainly deserves the chart success.
Good:
- Catchy chorus
- Minimal production, builds well
Bad:
- Cockney accents
Overall
A simple but endearing song, and more likeable than Lily Allen to boot.
