Jonny Trunk And Wisbey The Ladies' Bras

POP HISTORY IS MADE BY ‘THE LADIES’ BRAS’- SHORTEST SINGLE EVER HITS THE CHARTS

At just 36 seconds in length ‘The Ladies’ Bras’ by Jonny Trunk and Wisbey made pop history this week as the shortest song ever to the Top 75 UK Singles Chart. Entering at 70 it is the sixth highest entry of the week and all without any national radio airplay.

Discovered and driven almost entirely by broadcaster Danny Baker on his All Day Breakfast Show podcast, the song was created by Jonny Trunk and Wisbey, the team behind Dirty Fan Male (a collection of real fan letters written to Page 3 Girls and read in the style of James Mason, Cary Grant, Kenneth Williams and other incongruous characters) and became an instant favourite with listeners.

‘The Ladies’ Bras’ repeats the line,‘The Ladies’ Bras, The Ladies’ Bras, The Ladies’ Knickers and the Ladies’ Bras’ over a jaunty organ backing which is painfully catchy. When Baker first previewed the song in July reaction from listeners of the podcast was unprecedented and snowballed into the download only release of the track as a single and the subsequent record breaking entry into the UK Singles Chart.

All Day Breakfast Show Producer, Phil Wilding said,“After Danny played The Ladies’ Bras we were swamped with emails from listeners asking where they could buy it. The response was phenomenal. We’ve also had emails from people accidentally dousing themselves in petrol while dancing to it and husbands who have been beaten up by their wives while singing it unconsciously in front of squirming in-laws.”

The success of ‘The Ladies’ Bras’ is not only a ‘bit of harmless fun’ as importantly it signals a power shift away from traditional broadcast dominance and underlines the power of the podcast. The All Day Breakfast Show (or ADBS to friends) is only available to download and not broadcast in the traditional means. The Radio Times which recently placed the All Day Breakfast Show at Number 1 in ‘The Good Podcast Guide’ described ADBS the ‘Future of Radio’ echoing earlier comments made by The Guardian. The All Day Breakfast Show has been free since March 2007 and will begin charging £2 for five shows a week from September 3rd.

The song became an instant Number 1 on Wippit, easyMusic.com download charts and iTunes Comedy Chart too. A Facebook Group ‘In Appreciation of ‘Ladies’ Bras’ has people discussing the virtues of all 36 seconds and discussing the meaning of the lyrics. One fan on Facebook, Paul Hicks said,“The kids gave us the 'Crazy Frog', now its payback time.”
